A few things you should know as you journey through my home with me.

I bought this house almost 5 years ago, in 2016. I was freshly separated and my boys were 4 and 2. I didn’t really know the area well, but it was close enough to my family and it was in a great location. I remember touring that day with my dad, looking at several houses. As I recall, this house wasn’t on my radar to tour that day, but we saw signs for an open house and we followed them to check it out. When I pulled up, the house had the makings of something I would love: the yard was in good shape and the house was painted…mauve. Now mauve is not a color anyone should paint a home under any circumstance, but it signaled something to me: these people probably don’t have good design sense.

The house was exactly what I’d hoped for: built in 1994, and very ugly on the inside. What sold me though was that it was well taken care of. I knew immediately that a quick cosmetic face lift would breathe new life back into the house, which was exactly what I wanted.

At the time, I was about 8 months into having started my general contracting company and had done enough work to know the basics of remodeling. I got to work quickly, removing the extensive carpet and priming the entire house with white primer, covering up the purple, green, pink and blue hues throughout. My plan was to remove one wall in the kitchen to open it up, to replace all the flooring, bring in new cabinets, appliances and countertops, add about 40 can lights and install new base, casing and doors throughout. It was a basic cosmetic face lift on a house with great bones, which is every general contractor’s dream! Within just a few months, I saw my house transform from an ugly duckling to a diamond, and I’ve been fine tuning my décor ever since.

My house is small, about 1600 square feet. It is three bedrooms and has two bathrooms. I have a formal living and dining room and a family room. The biggest challenge I have is storage (which can be difficult when you have small children and all the accoutrements that come with them). I’ve had to come up with some creative solutions and purge regularly, but we love our little home. My yard is big and private, no neighbors looking in, and I have created the perfect sanctuary for my little family.
